Job Description

As a Development Scientist within our Microbiology Division you’ll be working in our Molecular Food Safety Team with up to 5 other scientists on the optimisation of enrichment protocols for new and existing molecular food safety products. You’ll work in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and guidance by the Team Leader, to ensure work is carried out within schedule.

Please note this is a 6 month fixed term contract covering maternity leave.

Key Responsibilities:

Working closely with the Molecular Food Safety Team, you will be jointly accountable for the following:

  • Preparation of culture media and other reagents
  • Carry out food pathogen testing for the development, verification & validation of molecular food safety products including:
    • Food sample preparation
    • Sub culturing enrichment samples onto selective agars & interpretation of results
    • Conducting molecular assay workflow (cell lysis, PCR)
    • Performing microbiological confirmatory tests
  • Validation (e.g. AOAC-RI PTM, AFNOR) of protocols for molecular products against ISO/USDA-FSIS/FDA-BAM standard methods
  • Planning and execution of custom protocol investigations for new and prospective customers
  • Maintain laboratory notebooks to the appropriate standard
  • Provide R&D team with regular project progress updates
  • Assist with product demonstrations for internal customers
  • Any others duties/projects that are within the skills and ability of the post-holder
  • Fulfilling the responsibilities of the position as defined in the Thermo Fisher Scientific Health, Safety and Environmental policies and associated Codes of Practice and actively promoting Health and Safety awareness

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications:

  • Microbiology (or another biological science related) degree or equivalent qualification
  • Experience in a microbiological laboratory is preferred but not essential
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software including Excel is required
  • Competency in basic scientific techniques
  • Good organisational and communication skills
  • High energy, with perseverance and the ability to work flexible hours (early start, late finish) in a high pace environment
