Position: Process Operator – General Manufacturing

The Microbiology Division (MBD) sits within Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Speciality Diagnostic Group. Our customers worldwide trust our microbiology solutions for the diagnosis of infectious disease and detection of bacterial contamination.

Team Overview:
In the fast paced manufacturing environment, multiple batches of material are processed through the area each shift. The production process is split into three stages, the first stage we mix the raw materials to form a base which is then, in the second stage, pressed to remove any liquid. The final stage is turning the materials back in to a powder form ready for use in products that help our clients to diagnose disease and identify contamination.

The General Manufacturing (GM) team is responsible for the manufacturing and production of the protein sources (peptones) that underpin Oxoid culture media. Head by the Team Lead, the GM manufacturing team operates two shifts with a team of 8 Process Operators who are led by the Shift Lead. Each shift you will be based on one of the manufacturing stages and will rotate between the stages to build knowledge of our manufacturing process.

Lifting and carrying moderate weights is an integral part of this position.

Key Responsibilities:
  • You will operate plant machinery safely and efficiently to manufacture our products in line with standard operating procedures;
  • You will set up batches by physically moving, checking and adding materials where required;
  • You will undertake process checks to ensure product quality levels;
  • Completing all batch related documentation, you will ensure a suitable level of handover to oncoming shifts;
  • Working with your team, you will ensure that production targets are met in line with quality and efficiency standards;
  • You will ensure that all work is carried out safely and that all near misses, incidents and accidents are reported and escalated.

  • A good communicator, you are able to build rapport with your colleagues in order to work in a positive and collaborative manner;
  • With good attention to detail, you approach situations with a meticulous eye on safety, quality and procedures;
  • You have excellent problem solving skills and are able to use your initiative to find solutions;
  • You are a motivated individual with a willingness to learn and share knowledge.
Please note this role requires a weekly rotating shifts (6.00-14.00 or 14.00-22.00).
