Director, Advanced Computing Services – Platform Engineering

The Director Advanced Computing Services – Platform Engineering has global responsibility for the Windows, Linux, Storage, AWS/Azure, VMware, High Performance Computing platforms across Thermo Fisher Scientific. Key accountabilities lie within strategy, planning, and execution for mission-critical technologies and teams that support operations and growth within a dynamic organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Platform Engineering team to configure and maintain development, test and production servers
  • Support development, test and production servers including after-hours support and monitoring server usage and up-time
    • Provide technical and procedural direction to the server team for the implementation of the servers
    • Provide technical and procedural direction to the company for the actual implementation of the servers used, by acting as liaison for internal and external communications directly with departments as required
  • Give direction in complex problem solving situations and participate in direct interaction with internal staff as required
  • Identify process improvement opportunities through the optimum use of the servers
  • Build and maintain material describing activity levels and possible next steps required for each server
  • Interface with vendors to obtain required equipment and software in a timely manner while ensuring proper audit and budget controls are met
  • Provide regular status reports and gather requirements from departments and provide input into the infrastructure products that are bought or built
  • Lead the team to build and maintain the servers required for development work, internal testing, customer testing and production environments
  • Document technical requirements, develop and oversee project plans and implement change control procedures
  • Leadership responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing/ resolving issues
    • Manage (directly) on and off shore teams, including hiring, developing, motivating, and directing people as they work
    • Manage (indirectly) team members, including assisting in the development, training and assignment of work/projects to other team members

Tool & Technology Environment:

Windows / Linux / virtualization server environments (1000+ servers)






High Performance Computing Clusters


  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/ Engineering or related field from an accredited university
    • Will consider minimum 5 years of professional IT experience in lieu of degree
  • Master's degree in Computer Science/ Engineering or related field from an accredited university (Preferred)


ITIL Experience and ITIL Foundation Certification (v3) - (desired)

PMP Certification - (desired)

Linus or Windows Administration Certification - (desired)

AWS / Azure cloud certifications (required)


  • 5+ years of experience with leading large platform teams (Windows, Linux, Storage, AWS/Azure, VMware, HPC), providing direction in complex problem-solving situations and participating in direct interaction with internal stakeholders and leadership
  • 2+ years of experience with a public cloud platform (AWS or Azure)
  • 2+ years of experience in High Performance Computing
  • Proven experience implementing and maintaining a consistent backup and disaster recovery plan
  • Management of on and off shore teams, including hiring, developing, motivating, and directing people as they work
  • Experience designing and developing highly available, scalable, fault-tolerant and disaster recoverable enterprise grade and web-scale software platforms and deployments
  • Experience leading operations teams that support Windows, Linux and virtualization server environments with more than 1000 servers
  • Experience planning, developing, and managing departmental expense and capital budgets
