Analytical Instruments Group - Materials & Structural Analysis Division

Our Thermo Scientific brand in the analytical instruments group offers customers in research, academic, industrial and applied markets a complete range of high-end analytical instruments as well as laboratory equipment, software and services. In the materials and structural analysis division we design, manu­facture, and support the broadest range of high-performance microscopy workflows that provide images and answers in the micro-, nano-, and picometer scales. Combining hardware and software expertise in electron, ion, FTIR, NIR, NMR UV/VIS and light microscopy with deep application knowledge in the materials science, life sci­ences, electronics, and natural resources markets. Our laboratory elemental analyzers use x-ray fluoresce (XRD), x-ray diffraction (XRD), and arc spark optical emission (EOS) techniques for precise analysis of bulk materials in the metals, cement, minerals and petrochemicals industries. Our material characterization instruments include rheometers and extruders that measure viscosity, elasticity, process ability and temperature related material changes of various materials. We also provide a range of elemental analysis instruments used in product development. Our worldwide team of 4,600 employees is dedicated to customers’ pursuit accelerating innovation and driving productivity.


The Applications Development team supports the realization of higher value through application specific product improvement. The Applications Development Engineer will be part of this team & is considered an expert user of our TEM products. Primary responsibilities include ownership of the development of world-class methods, processes and protocols for our MSBU Mid-Range TEM applications. This person will work closely with the Product Marketing & Development teams in Eindhoven and Brno to ensure new products meet customers needs.


Plan, drive & evaluate applications support & development throughout the Product Management Process (PMP). Identify & report issues. Plan testing & feedback to engineering on end-use system performance, new design features, hardware qualification and advanced use-cases. Perform demonstrations on pre-release products. Collect, compile & evaluate test data to determine appropriate limits & variables for solution specifications. Develop Best Practice Documents (BPDs) for reproducible distribution of application implementation & training of customers in the field. Deliver cutting edge marketing & sales collateral to the Product Marketing group for incorporation into marketing, sales training & sales material. Act as a business unit, sales & customer communication conduit to R&D & engineering regarding new features & specifications. Provide expert technical/applications support & guidance to Sales & Service, R&D, Manufacturing, Product Marketing, Customer Service & others. Advise on technical direction, applications or use of products consistent with customer requirements.

Minimum Qualifications:

Strong background in scientific experimentation or process development & thorough familiarity with the operation of TEMs, theory & technique. This person will be able to “think out of the box”. They will enjoy solving difficult & advanced technical challenges.

The ideal candidate will possess the following combination of education, experience & skills:

  • BS, MS or PhD degree in a relevant field (for example: Material Science, Physics or Engineering).
  • Demonstrated experience with TEM operation, theory & technique including the many detectors and applications. (5+ years using advanced TEM instrumentation).
  • Demonstrated comfort with an industrial or corporate environment.
  • Experience interacting with highly technical customers & communicating complex technical concepts to a variety of audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to systematically develop new and improved methods & protocols used in a characterization & experimental environment.
  • Must be proficient with statistical methods & analytical SW.
  • Must be proficient in basic Microsoft office software products.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to provide critical interfaces between Customers, Product Marketing, R&D and engineering.
  • Ability to independently diagnose, define & execute solutions in highly dynamic and ambiguous environment.
  • Make significant contribution to defining the future direction of TEM products.
  • Ability to impart application specific knowledge internally & externally.
  • Thrives in a dynamic team & enjoys being exposed to a constant variety of complex issues.
  • Able to travel internationally up to 20%.
