Job Description

The field service engineer is required to service, install, calibrate, maintain, test, and repair Thermo Fisher Scientific’s range of Isotope-Ratio Mass Spectrometry, Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry and Bulk Elemental instruments.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide timely technical support to customers via phone, email, or remote PC control.
  • Required to train customers in the routine use of Thermo Fisher Scientific’s range of IRMS, LCMS and BE instruments and provide applications support where possible.
  • Create and present calibration results in graphic and written form by preparing reports for key stakeholders.
  • Required to complete instrument tests and interpret/analyse results to assist with defect identification, instrument optimization or method development.
  • Collect information and work with customers to test samples to ensure equipment meets required standards, and liaise with factory technical or applications support where necessary.
  • Be responsible for fostering a partnership with the business Group’s customers by providing them with advice and technical support that will help them gain the most from the products that we sell them.
  • Knowledge and experience of high vacuum systems and pump types, electron ionization physics, radio-frequency quadrupole physics, liquid and gas flow characteristics, combustion and pyrolysis chemical conversion, mass spectrometry principles, x-ray diffraction (XRD) and x-ray florescence (XRF) physics, and instrument electrical troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of applications for IRMS in areas such as such as geology, oceanography, environmental quality, food adulteration, and sports drug testing.
  • Attend product training at the factories internationally, occasionally up to a fortnight in duration.
  • Possess, or be willing to undertake, certification for x-ray equipment within the relevant state, and adhere to any applicable state or federal requirements.
  • Perform in accordance all relevant certification procedures, such as NATA, ISO.
  • Take ownership for customer satisfaction for services performed.
  • Assist the Sales Team with technical information, training and demonstrations as agreed with your manager.
  • To help the team achieve sales and margin (gross) targets for designated product portfolio/territory.
  • Perform in accordance with the AS/NZS ISO9002: 1994 Quality Standard, as detailed in the Company’s Quality Manual.
Minimum requirements:
  • Tertiary qualification in a Scientific (chemistry/physics) discipline required.
  • Understand and provide knowledge support of applications including:
    • Geology applications for research
    • Food Adulteration application for Food and Agriculture purity
    • Doping application for governmental testing authorities, including knowledge around steroid molecule identification in athletes
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience required.
  • Experience in the routine operations of IRMS essential.
  • Experience in the routine operation of LCMS and Bulk Elemental systems preferred.
  • Experience within the scientific market and/or familiarity with scientific products required.
  • Experience in a technical support role preferred.
  • Favorable – experience with Thermo Fisher IRMS/LCMS/Bulk Elemental software and hardware.
  • Organisational skills with an ability to prioritise manage time effectively and meet agreed deadlines.
  • An initiative taker who has the ability to work autonomously, and has an enthusiastic, energetic and positive attitude while being a supportive team player.
  • Ability to create and foster meaningful and beneficial partnerships with our customers, suppliers and peers.
