Job Description

Essential Functions

Set-up bleeding area a minimum of 15 minutes prior to shift starting

to receive unborn calves (slunks) for bleeding.

Extract blood from unborn calves in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures. Blood collectors will have 5 days of supervised training with either a lead collector or supervisor prior to being released to work independently. Annually each blood collector will have a 1-day refresher course on job skills and safety procedure. The use of stainless steel scissors are used in this job.

At all times blood collectors must follow Life Technologies safety procedures. The required (PPE) Personal Protection Equipment is required whenever working inside the plant facility. It is the collector’s responsibility to follow all the plant food and safety policies at all times. We are contractors working inside their facilities and must adhere to their rules and regulations.

Employee is required to remain at the slaughter plant for the entire shift. You’re required to stay in the collection area during your entire shift. As contractors working inside the plant we don’t have access to the entire plant, only our collection area. A lunch break is required and should be coordinated with plant production and collection work flow.

Prepare blood and required paperwork for daily shipment to a designated processing laboratory as directed by your supervisor. Contact Supervisor and/or processing lab if there’s any delay in shipping. Fax daily paperwork to the processing lab that receives your production.

Perform clean-up duties throughout your shift as required. Leave your area clean at the end of your shift.

Maintain an adequate inventory of equipment and supplies required to perform the job duties. Must notify supervisor or nearest processing lab in plenty of time prior to running out of supplies or equipment.

Blood collectors must follow the guild lines set forth in the Life Technologies Time Keeping Policy.

Report any deviations or unusual occurrences of Standard Operating Procedures or slaughter house activity to the Supervisor and/or Lead Collector responsible for the collection of blood at the assigned slaughter facility.

If you are sick and cannot report to work you must first contact your immediate Lead collector. If you cannot reach your Lead, contact your supervisor or co-worker immediately. Telephone call must be made within 1- hour of your regular start time. If your shift cannot be covered by another co-worker you must call your supervisor back the 2nd time to report the plant is without coverage.

Blood collectors who work at double shift plants may be required to cover each other when they are out between 1-3 days.

Maintain a working relationship with the slaughter house management assigned to oversee the blood collection operation.

May be required to perform other related duties as required and/or assigned. Some facility requires us to skin the calves, that would be part of your job duty.

Education:

Prefer a High School diploma or equivalent experience.

Experience:

Good communications, customer service and technical skills necessary. Previous work experience in a meat packing facility is helpful but not a necessary requirement.

Has contact with equivalent levels of company employees and external customers.

Working Conditions:

Works in a slaughterhouse environment. Depending on the location of the bleeding station within the slaughter facility, the work area may be noisy, strong pungent odors, warm (+90f); damp, and congested or constricted to a sealed work area. May on a continuous basis walk, bend and lift up to 50 – 7 0 lbs. Must be able to work flexible around core hours 1st Shift: AM, 2nd Shift: PM and Split Shift: AM/PM.
