The MSD Operations Engineering group is responsible for smooth introduction of new products into the factory and field and for sustaining engineering support after transfer from design to volume production through the product end of life. This group collaborates closely with the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), Product Marketing, R&D, manufacturing, logistics, purchasing, quality, and Global Technical Support (GTS) groups within MSD to ensure development and continuous improvement of profitable products according to the latest quality standards.

The primary focus of the Manager Engineering – NPI and Sustaining Products is to manage the engineering group that provides factory requirements and deliverables for new product introduction (NPI) projects, process and product improvements after release, and efficient solutions to problems in Manufacturing and Supply chain. The position closely interfaces with various Thermo Fisher functions to solve complex problems. The function also monitors and coaches team members’ professional and technical development.

Specific deliverables associated with this position include:
  • Manages the Operations Engineering Group, which may include a team of engineers, technicians and technical specialists.
  • Ensures proper staffing of engineers to provide technical expertise for projects.
  • Guides team members’ professional development by goal setting, setting standards for performance, mentoring and providing challenges for further growth.
  • Manages Engineering group technical competence requirements and ongoing development (including education, training, coaching, and growth) in a process driven environment
  • Pro-actively utilizes statistical process control (SPC) methods to improve quality, implement process improvements and drive controlled changes.
  • Facilitates higher level factory or field escalations as needed by interacting with the appropriate functional groups to achieve resolution.
  • Coordinates approval for capital equipment expenditures needed to set up test tooling in the factory and in the supply chain.
  • Responsible for timely execution of factory and field continuous improvement, equipment and efficiency improvement projects
  • Cultivates close relationships with functional groups to adequately staff projects and resolve conflicts.
  • Supports local and global Operations team in executing strategies, including cooperation with the other Thermo Fisher sites on projects
  • Facilitates and may lead cross-functional improvement and other Operations projects from inception to completion.
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Qualifications:
  • University degree in a technical discipline, or a combination of education and experience that demonstrates the required skills
  • Typically requires 7-10 years of experience in high-tech industry engineering environment in manufacturing, service or development
  • Typically requires 3-5 years management experience (people and/or projects) with demonstrated experience managing cross-functional projects and developing technical teams
  • Strong preference for candidate with demonstrated experience in data analysis using statistical process control (SPC) methods including process characterization, systematic problem solving, experimental methods and test procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and resolve issues that involve gaining cooperation of cross-functional, multi-cultural groups and sites without damaging relationships, sometimes in pressure situations
  • Working knowledge of project management, budgets and resource planning.
  • Must be able to work for extended period in clean room environment
  • Must have ability to obtain a valid passport and travel regionally and internationally as required
  • Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong English proficiency
