Understand current lane flows by origin and destination. Use data mining skills assembling required information from freight payment history, invoice history and other data sources.
Drive compliance across a “core carrier” network and a detailed understanding of shipment characteristics for each division. Must have the ability to recognize and capitalize on opportunities for adjustment to mode, service levels, shipment frequency, consolidation, etc.
Proven leadership skills and understand the total costs of the supply chain; plan, source, make delivery.
Able to develop a business plan with key metrics and communicate the strategy to team members and executive management.
Understand service requirements and customer expectations as well as carrier capabilities for domestics inbound/outbound and international imports/exports.
Manage carrier base. Regularly meet with carriers. Use cost, quality, and service metrics to evaluate each carrier’s performance. Make changes as required.
Familiarity with transportation contracts and the negotiation of terms and conditions.
Continue to develop and enhance metrics for service, quality and cost.
Meet or exceed personal and department goals set for cost, quality and service. Each transportation manager has an annual savings goal based on reduction of transportation spend.
Ensure compliance with routing guide and its core carriers.
Develop reports that provide transportation cost and carrier performance.
Provide daily, weekly, monthly support for divisional Operations, Sales, Finance and Purchasing relative to transportations inquiries in a matrix organization.
Analyze the impact of contract proposals. Provide insight into the financial and operational impact of proposed changes versus the current state. Calculate current expense and operational baselines for comparison to actual results.
Develop and install shipment consolidation and other cost saving measures.
Review freight claim processing. Minimize freight claims. Maximize freight claim collections.
Perform Monthly Business Reviews (MBR) with divisional clients and implement supply chain best practices.
