This position represents a key partnership with the VP of R&D, performing strategic and operational activities required to manage MSD’s extensive R&D program, budget and innovation excellence initiatives.

Major responsibilities include:
  • Lead a global Program Portfolio Management (PPM) function (dotted line to local PPM’s) across all major R&D locations.
    • Determine and drive consistent methods/tools for portfolio management, project planning, execution, risk management, business case development
    • Collaborate with other Thermo Fisher divisions on process, project, and personnel opportunities
    • Drive continuous improvement culture with respect to portfolio delivery and leadership, utilizing practical performance metrics, lessons learned and group improvement plans.
    • Lead portfolio performance reviews, which feed into Quarterly Business Reviews (QBR’s)
    • Facilitate resolution of strategic global escalations and priority changes
  • Lead MSD portfolio prioritization process, facilitating recommendations to guide strategic DLT decisions.
  • Perform global portfolio analyses and provide the VP R&D insights and data required to manage R&D budget and programs in an efficient and effective way.
  • Partner with the VP R&D to complete the Annual Operating Plan for the next year, including program content and budget.
  • Report on key portfolio metrics and KPI’s and participate in regular monthly and quarterly business reviews. Present, as required, to appropriate Division and Corporate Leadership Teams.
  • Participate in Divisional strategic planning and implementation of major engineering, technology & innovation strategies and initiatives.
  • Define program management organizational requirements as needs evolve in MSD.
  • Lead and track key global initiatives that improve global R&D productivity or effectiveness.
Requirements:
  • More than 5 years of experience successfully leading innovation projects and cross-functional teams
  • 10+ years of experience in a high-technology, complex product development environment
  • Direct experience successfully managing a portfolio of technical projects
  • Technical degree, advanced degree preferred.
  • Proven ability to effectively communicate up/down and across departments in a global organization.
  • Experience in using standard Project Management tools. PMI certification and/or Critical Chain Project Management experience a plus
  • Strong analytical and influencing skills
  • Ability to travel internationally (up to 20%), as a regular part of managing a global portfolio and relationships with local portfolio managers.
