Job Title: Senior Specialist Sample Handling
Reports To: Techncial Support Manager, CCS

Position Summary:
The CCS business unit manufactures and supplies chromatography and sample handling consumables. These products are sold to a worldwide market made up predominantly of pharmaceutical companies, analytical laboratories, universities, hospitals, government institutions and a wide range of industrial companies in varying fields of activities.

The Company’s growth relies upon maintaining a high level of scientific credibility. Full applications and technical support play an important role in terms of determining customer perception and capability of the product range. Strong technical support is a key differentiator for our products and services in the marketplace.

The job holder is responsible for delivering technical support by providing technical information regarding the application and manufacture of the Sample Handling product line. In Addition the full range of products including HPLC, BioLC, Sample preperation and GC consumables needs to be supported in a professional manner and this will entail a small amount of travel on Company business. The job holder will have extensive experience and specialism in borosilicate glass and polymers as they relate to Vials & Closures products within a chromatography laboratory.

As well as providing support on existing products, the job holder will be expected to maintain a good degree of flexibility and other tasks like new product development support may be required from them.



Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. (customer support) To demonstrate a strong customer focus in all our activities
  2. (customer support) To support customers by providing an effective technical support enquiry service to answer enquiries on product selection, product care and use and techniques during business core hours
  3. (customer support) To support the activities associated with timely and satisfactory resolution of customer issues including complaints investigation
  4. (customer support) To work with key customers on collaborative projects either in-house or at the customer’s location
  1. (customer support) To generate and present approved training seminars to the commercial team, dealer network and end users, promoting the scientific capabilities of the Company and its products
  2. (BU support) To rigorously investigate root cause of complaints and work with the factories to identify preventative actions
  3. (BU support) To develop and write content for online tools
  4. (BU support) To work collaboratively with colleagues in the business unit, product managers, operations team, commercial team, dealer network, and end users to technically support the product line.
  5. (marketing support) To deliver approved quality applications or other technical data as required in support of our Business Unit’s goal tree objectives in a timely manner that highlight ThermoFisher Scientific’s value offering within sample handiling
  6. (marketing support) To develop and maintain a range of approved collateral that demonstrates the ease of use of products, or promotes the products with an emphasis on providing a total solution for the customer
  7. (marketing support) To write, prepare and present Marcom approved scientific posters and presentations at exhibitions and symposia in order to raise the profile of the Company and its’ products
  8. (R&D support) To support all technical activities associated with timely release of new vials and closures products
  9. (HSE) To comply with responsibilities outlined in the H&S policy
  10. (HSE/IP) To maintain detailed records of all work carried out in lab books (and all other relevant formats eg. Electronic files) which are maintained as the Company’s intellectual property
  11. (leadership) To behave as a role model leader in the department, exhibiting the core 4I values
  12. (leadership) As a senior member of the department to support and mentor other department members, ensuring that the staff meet their delivery/quality deadlines
  13. (leadership) To scope manage and support laboratory based testing required in support of the sample handiling product line
  14. (leadership) To work effectively with members of other departments on multi-functional projects
  15. (leadership) To work with stakeholders on collaborative projects to determine prioritization of work within area of expertise
  16. (leadership) To utilize the PPI (practical performance improvement) management process to continuously improve the performance of the technical support team
  17. (leadership) To own relevant parts of the business case , report out monthly using technical data as required (including trending) and critically assess output/quality of work in area of expertise
  18. (leadership) To collate applications data to improve the format and presentation of new and existing product information in support of both our sales and marketing departments’ objectives
  19. (General) To communicate relevant observations on data produced
  20. (General) To carry out any other duties as reasonably requested by the line manager
  21. (General) To effectively support the Techncial Support Manager and deputise this role when required


Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

The job holder will have a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Material Science with a focus on glass, polymeric chemistry or related discipline. Relevant experience within a chromatography environment (preferably in a relevant focus industry) and a detailed understanding of the theory and practical application of glass and polymer, vials and closures for chromatography applications, HPLC, LC-MS or GC/GC-MS and associated techniques is also required.
A Second language is preferred
The role also require a small amount of travel (<10%) to support the business.

Non-Negotiable Hiring Criteria:
  • Detailed understanding of working with borosilicate glass and polymers as they relate to vials and closures products within a chromatography laboratory.
  • The ability to work on own initiative and to meet deadlines and targets
  • Good communication skills, both written and oral
  • A good level of interpersonal, motivational and organisational skills
  • A good knowledge of Health & Safety regulations and COSHH requirements
