Division Summary:

The Anatomical Pathology Division (APD) provides laboratories with the broadest portfolio of instrument and consumable solutions, from specimen collection and grossing to advanced staining and cover slipping. The Division generates $350MM in annual revenue and has 1,500 employees in 13 countries. The anatomical pathology product line includes Richard Allan Scientific, Erie Scientific, Menzel, Microm, Shandon, and Lab Vision.

Position Summary:

The Assistant Controller/Accounting Manager is a key member of the financial leadership team, supporting the Kalamazoo site operations. This person will prepare related business planning and analysis functions. In addition, the Accounting Manager/Controller will be responsible for staff management and supervision as well as day to day functions within the Department including cash control, bank reconciliations, oversight of the Accounts Payable function, Payroll, General Ledger activities, taxes, accounting system database controls and system balancing.

Essential Functions:

  • Day-to-day responsibility for the administrative management of the accounting system including Accounts Payable, Payroll, and Credit & Collections personnel, organization of functions and processes, and the development of systems and procedures.
  • Ensure the operation of all automated systems and forms for handling timekeeping, billing, bookkeeping and related matters.
  • Preparation of month and year end reconciliations and closings.
  • Process and record incoming and outgoing wire transfers.
  • Reconcile multiple bank accounts.
  • Review sales and use tax processes
  • Oversee tax obligations incurred by the entity.
  • Calculate and process royalty payments
  • Oversee all corporate credit card accounts.
  • Ensure that payments are disbursed timely and accurately.
  • Handle journal entries as needed for General Ledger, including the payroll journal entries.
  • Assist site controller in improving processes, systems and technologies.
  • Ensure intercompany transactions and balances are compliant corporate policies
  • Review fixed asset accounting
  • Act as administrator of the general ledger
  • Manage Annual Operating Plan process
  • Act as primary liaison on internal and external audits
  • Analyze and provide commentary on month-end financial results
  • Ensures monthly financial close procedures are completed accurately and timely

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting and/or finance is required; additionally, a MBA, M.A. in Finance, CPA or CMA is strongly preferred.
  • 6 years of relevant financial/accounting experience in a manufacturing environment, possessing strong working knowledge of GAAP.
  • 3 years of proven leadership experience working within finance and accounting.
  • Strong analytical skills, proficient in the use of ERP (JDE experience a plus)/accounting software applications, MPS/MRP systems and Microsoft Office suite.
  • Results oriented, metric driven leader that utilizes a collaborative problem solving approach to continuous improvement. (PPI, Lean and or Six Sigma manufacturing concepts and working experience a plus.)

    Non-Negotiable Hiring Criteria:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting and/or finance is required.
  • Ability to manage teams effectively
  • 6 years of relevant financial/accounting experience in a manufacturing environment, possessing strong working knowledge of GAAP.
  • Strong analytical skills, proficient in the use of ERP (JDE experience a plus)/accounting software applications, MPS/MRP systems and Microsoft Office suite.
