Sr. Manager, OS Platform Engineering

Thermo Fisher Scientific is looking for an experienced, dynamic leader for the Operating Systems (OS) Platform Engineering team. The Sr. Manager, OS Platform Engineering will support Windows and Linux and virtualization server environments with more than 1000 servers. This role will drive continuous learning to encourage and promote improvement in work through innovation, new ideas, and change to enhance knowledge, know-how, and skill development. Successful candidate will have experience in leading teams within complex enterprise environments including: Unix, Linux, Wintel, Azure, AWS, VMWare.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Build, lead and mentor a team of highly skilled engineers
  • Lead the Platform Engineering team and play a leading role in Thermo Fisher’s digital transformation
  • Promote a progressive technology driven culture, working with key teams within the IT organization
  • Drive and encourage high levels of automation throughout the organization
  • Drive innovation within the engineering teams and ACS organization
  • Automate the deployment, monitoring, and maintenance of technology systems
  • Engineer high performance and high availability cloud based systems for the organization
  • Create SOPs and system diagrams to transition to the Run organization for day to day support
  • Drive continual improvement in systems operations through tools and automation
  • Report on overall health and optimization of IT systems to a senior leadership level
  • Create and drive the definition of the roadmap for OS Platforms and virtualization in collaboration with the architecture team
  • Drive root cause analyses, and coach others on doing them, in collaboration with software development teams
  • Proactively anticipate technical issues and make architectural and design decisions to avoid them
  • Support in effective supplier and contract management with our key vendors
  • Responsible to manage and maintain complex Enterprise software licensing models
  • Responsible for incident and problem management within the platforms space
  • Works closely with our external partners and industry leaders to ensure we have a keen understanding of where industry trends and technologies are going and factor those into our strategies and roadmaps
  • Work closely with IT Security to ensure the solutions we’re designing and delivering meet data security and compliance requirements
  • Provide regular communication to peers, IT leadership and Business leadership on areas for improvement, progress, milestones, and areas of success
  • Ensure documentation and processes are well defined. Successfully create and define new process and standards for the global organization
  • Create roadmap and work towards dev-ops model of service engineering

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:
  • In depth understanding and experience leading a Linux, Windows and Virtualization
  • Direct experience in transforming an organization’s on premise data center operations to Cloud infrastructure
  • Experienced in creating and implementing long/short term road maps
  • Keep abreast of broad technical changes across the industry
  • Establish credibility through strong, hands-on technology experience and are will to jump into the trenches when needed
  • Experience managing or leading large-scale cloud migrations
  • Direct experience in transforming an organization’s on premise data center operations to Cloud infrastructure
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science or other technical field is desired
    • 5 years of additional direct and applicable professional experience in the IT field may be substituted
  • Strong interpersonal and excellent documentation skills are a must
  • Ability to explain and champion technical concepts to a broad audience focusing on business acumen
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills required
  • Ability to problem solve and work well in complex, ambiguous situations
  • Strong analytical and product management skills required, including a thorough understanding of how to interpret customer business needs and translate them into application and operational requirements
  • Ability to present technical problems and solutions to management in a manner that can consumed and translated into appropriate program improvement requests
