Job Description

Category Manager will have overall responsibility to manage a portfolio of Third Party suppliers in the assigned categories/segments to drive our program’s value across the supplier community, and to achieve revenue and margin targets while improving the supplier and customer experience.

A dedicated team of 4-6 professionals consisting of Supplier Channel Manager(s), Buyer(s) and Backlog Specialist(s) will directly report to and support the Category Manager.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop, deploy and drive strategy across assigned categories.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of designated team including but not limited to purchase order processing, backlog management, supplier interface and negotiations, workflow and personnel issues.
  • Establish, review and analyze metrics/reports on staff performance, publish and provide updates on metrics during staff meetings and to senior management.
  • Develop and modify staff responsibilities to continuously enhance efficiency and improve processes.
  • Support supplier negotiations to achieve cost savings/discount targets and margin expansion goals.
  • Set and achieve individual and team goals in alignment with department and division.
  • Provide Role Model Leadership to team; lead by example.
  • Create a “team culture” among direct reports and utilize the team concept in dealings with suppliers to enhance the supplier experience.
  • Lead team in our efforts to significantly increase electronic transactions with suppliers.
  • Ensure the use of our Supplier Ranking tool to drive favorable improvements.
  • Drive down cost variance and assign/assist with quarter end backlog reduction efforts.
  • Act as key interface with Product Management in the assigned categories to ensure strategy alignment.
  • Assist with payment term negotiations and credit hold issues when necessary by acting as the key interface with Finance, A/P and/or suppliers.
  • Participate in and lead interviews, candidate selection and hiring process, training and continuous development.
  • Manage performance of employees and team by conducting PMDs, staff meetings, 1:1 meetings, etc. as required.
  • Utilize PPI and/or other methodologies to drive efficiencies.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent business experience (8 years of additional experience in lieu of Bachelors) and a High School diploma or GED.
  • 3+ years of experience in business.
  • Experience in supplier negotiations.
  • Proficient computer skills with Microsoft Office, specifically Word, Excel and Power Point.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 3+ years of experience in a supervisory role.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with Cognos.
  • Ability to work in a self-directed environment with minimal day-to-day supervision while providing leadership to staff.
  • Ability to prioritize work and maintain a high level of organization.
  • Proven track record of being able to work well with teams, internally and cross-functionally.
  • Demonstrable leadership qualities and ability to effectively manage others.
  • Excellent time management, planning and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, high volume environment and to adapt to changing requirements and tasks.
  • Ability to handle adverse, ambiguous and/or stressful situations with professionalism.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and ability to communicate clearly and concisely with strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Strong business acumen.
