Job Description
The Position

The Applications Engineering Manager is responsible for directing all aspects of the Field Applications and Applications Development personnel. The applications group supports customers at many locations around the world. In addition, this team of highly cross-trained Field Applications Engineers and Applications Development Engineers supportsapplications development and technical marketing from FEI's Corporate Headquarters in Hillsboro, Oregon. The Applications Manager should be able to speak technically about our products and be able to direct the day-to-day tasks of the Applications Engineers within this global group. Major responsibilities shall include scheduling, management of personnel issues, ownership of applications plans for each site, management of customer satisfaction at each site and close interaction with Product Marketing and Sales.

Specific deliverables associated with this opportunity include:

  • Support the Market Division and Sales Organization through successful planning and integration of Field Applications Engineers to meet customer requirements in the field and in the factory
  • Manage all aspects of the field based Applications Engineers and manage the factory-based Applications Development team, to include personnel and performance issues, day-to-day activities and budgeting
  • Own applications plans for each customer site supported by the Field Applications Engineers and work closely with Marketing Divisions and Sales to ensure success of tool on site
  • Direct multiple development projects simultaneously and work closely with Project Management and Product Management
  • Work with current customers to help create use cases for FEI tools that will promote further sales
  • Be up-to-date on FEI's metrology and defectivity product lines and be able to advance applications knowledge in these areas
  • Create technical notes and contribute to product marketing as needed
  • Provide applications support for new product development per customer need and FEI's internal Product Management Process (PMP)
  • Recommend and advise on direction for potential applications consistent with customer requirements and technical feasibility
  • Manage and support the customer base by developing and conducting basic and advanced customer training
  • Develop and conduct technology transfer documents and training programs in applications for technical staff
  • Develop scientific and technical information at conferences and meetings in support of sales and marketing efforts
  • Disseminate general information regarding technologies relevant to advancement of product design applications
  • Provide scientific and technical support to R & D, Manufacturing, Customer Service and other departments as required
  • Assist with writing manuals and release notes
  • Conceive, plan and conduct experimental research to advance applications knowledge as applied to use of systems for product design
  • Ability to manage staff, assign specific duties, and create a constructive and cooperative working relationship.

The Requirements

The successful candidate will possess the following combination of education and experience:

  • Typically requires a University degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics or related field, preferably an advanced degree
  • Typically requires 10+ years experience supporting high-performance tools, including a combination of experience in applications, technology, systems design, program management, field service or related roles
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully interact with customers in support of system sales (e.g., pre-sales applications development, JDP, field support)
  • Proven ability to direct multiple technology projects simultaneously
  • 5 or more years proven experience managing service, support or applications engineers in a matrix environment
  • Frequently interacts with subordinate supervisors, customers, and/or functional peer group managers. Also interacts with senior management. Interactions could involve matters between functional areas, other company divisions or units, or customers and the company. This person must be able to communicate well and must be well organized and must have the ability to manage a large group of people, often in a remote manner
  • Acts as advisor to subordinates to meet schedules and/or resolves technical problems, developing and administering budgets, schedules, and performance requirements
  • Must be able to travel internationally with the ability to obtain a valid passport
