How Will You Make an Impact?

Provide Mechanical design capability to new product development (NPD) project teams. In addition to high-quality design, responsibilities include keeping abreast of current technology and providing technical advice to the company. Designs and analyzes mechanical systems, equipment and packaging. Directs support personnel in the preparation of detailed design, design testing and prototype fabrication

What will you do?

  • Perform detailed mechanical design and calculations using CAD tools for simple components and assemblies. These designs or drawings may be for products, or prototypes, including components, assemblies, fixtures or tools, and may be new designs or modifications to existing designs
  • Support development of simple cast or molded designs, subject to extensive peer review
  • Ensure documentation completely and correctly records the design:
· BOM accuracy
· Drawing accuracy and completeness
· CAD database completeness, robustness, and accuracy
· Specification Sheets
· Other documents related to the product or design
  • Track status of design, design database/drawings, prototypes, costs
  • Ensure that engineering process documentation (e.g., ISO, PDP) is completed for all pertinent tasks
  • Follow safety guidelines as appropriate for product line as specified by the training matrix. Examples include laser and X-ray safety, personal protective equipment, as well as proper use of tools and diagnostic equipment
  • Support Design For Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) techniques
  • Set up and run software simulation models for thermal, stress, shock, fluid dynamics to test designs and evaluate design trade-offs
  • Resolve technical issues arising from field or Manufacturing problems and relating to new or existing mechanical, electro-mechanical, fluidic or opto-mechanical instrument systems
  • Help to ensure that functional and technical specifications are met as to reproducibility of materials and process, as well as to function, manufacturability, reliability, serviceability, appearance, cost, and comply with regulatory requirements as appropriate
  • Schedule and perform design reviews and subsequent follow up and documentation
  • Identify potential deviations from specifications or schedules and report same to management
  • Maintains close liaison with relevant suppliers, external consultants, potential users and other departments
  • Maintain accurate records of time spend on projects and enter it into our system
  • Provide input regarding tools and technology for design and analysis to increase throughput and design/documentation accuracy
  • Regularly participate on departmental and personal quality programs, such as continuous improvement teams
  • Perform other duties as required

How will you get there?

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline required
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • 1 year or equivalent knowledge/experience in Engineering and Product Design

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities necessary to perform essential functions

  • 3-D CAD Solid Modeling: at least 1 semester formal training (SolidWorks preferred)
  • Ability to read and understand mechanical prints and specifications.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a project team environment.
  • High degree of mechanical aptitude
  • Good written and verbal communications skills
  • Good attention to detail, organizational and follow up skills
  • Windows, MSOffice proficiency

Desired Capabilities
  • Familiarity with ANSI standards and geometric tolerancing
  • Ability to estimate completion time of design tasks
  • Familiarity with DFMA concepts
  • Ability to estimate manufacturing costs
  • Familiarity with optics, fluidic and electro-mechanical devices
  • Able to use scientific principles and methods to understand, test, and resolve technical problems that may lie beyond the normal scope of Mechanical Engineering
