Job Description

Task and Responsibilities

  • Leverage on best in class transportation management processes to drive continuous improvement of cost and service levels and maturity of our transportation management;
  • Review, monitor and manage transportation activity and spend for assigned shipping sites and carriers;
  • Design and implement cost containment initiatives. Identify appropriate methods and carriers for imports into the EU from the U.S and Asia utilizing appropriate combinations of ocean, air, and ground carriers in concert with consolidation, and deconsolidation points;
  • Design and implement appropriate inbound & outbound road/air networks utilizing a proper mix of Full Truck Load, Less Than Truck Load, and Parcel carriers;
  • Develop a program for corporate and local level carrier management programs facilitated by formal review meetings and performance scorecards;
  • Leverage best transportation practices across the Thermo Fisher enterprise and RSD Transportation Management Team;
  • As a role model leader, attract, build, and develop a transportation team with depth of knowledge, breadth of understanding for transportation and broader supply chain.


  • Bachelor degree in supply chain management, business logistics or economics/finance;
  • 7 to 10 years of transport/logistics management experience preferably with shipper, carrier, and/or consulting firm, eexperience in all modes of transportation;
  • Proven ability at:
    • transport sourcing and contract negotiations with carriers and other logistics providers offering services throughout the EU on a budget scope of at least 20M$ of yearly transportation costs in a complex environment,
    • in transportation management of a complex network serving the EU region;
  • Proven knowledge in parcel transportation with European and local providers;
  • Experience with management of dangerous goods / cold chain transportation desired but not mandatory: current and working knowledge of all applicable legislations (ADR, IMDG, IATA…);
  • Experience with the management of own fleet would be a plus;
  • Experience in team management.


  • Autonomous strong analytical and computer skills. Ability to run analysis / data crunching on his own to make sound decisions decision, through the conceptualization and evaluation of different courses of action to meet or exceed operational goals;
  • Ability to detail projects and drive implementation by influencing others. Hands on and able to write S&OP, routing guides and drive implementation with internal & external stakeholders;
  • Good end to end supply chain acumen, with good understanding on how planning/purchasing and warehouse operations are impacting transportation and vice versa. Ability to business case the tradeoffs between end to end Supply Chain Costs, quality, Lead time and customer experience
  • Good team management and leadership skills. Comfortable with hands on managerial style, but able to effectively delegate;
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills to deal effectively with all levels of the organization, initiate actions to drive change and resolve cross functional issues;
  • A dynamic, high energy leader with a track record as an effective communicator and negotiator;
  • Excellent organizational skills to plan, organize, and set priorities to facilitate timely execution – ability to cope with conflicting requests & priorities;
  • Strong written and oral communications skills; Fluent in English, and preferably as well Dutch if located in NL. French and German would be a plus.
