Location/Division Specific Information
The Ward Hill Site Leader, part of the Laboratory Chemicals Division and Fine Chemicals Business Unit, has overall responsibility for the 110,000 square foot Ward Hill facility. The 3 sites focus on sourcing, analysis, packaging, and distribution of dry and liquid chemicals in both flammable and non-flammable chemical classes. This position is also responsible for the day to day management of business staff located in Tewksbury. This is a highly customer centric role dealing directly with end customers and various channel partners.

How will you make an impact?
Oversee operations for 3 locations while maintaining a high level of customer focus. You will lead, empower and engage a team of 160 employees.

What will you do?
  • Responsible for day to day Safety, Quality, Delivery, Cost Leadership throughout the Ward Hill Chemical facilities. Instill voice of customer throughout each process to ensure all Operations have the customer requirement in mind, every day for every job.
  • Safety – Drive continued improvements in health and environmental safety to exceed world-class levels. Including all external reporting requirements, site safety training and records, and accident investigation.
  • Team Development – Evaluate, coach and develop existing team; Recruit exceptional talent; Develop succession plans and upgrade the Operations team bench strength; Identify training needs and requirements
  • Lean Manufacturing/Continuous Improvement – Lead the implementation of Thermo Fisher’s continuous improvement methodology (Practical Process Improvement) and the implementation of Lean Manufacturing techniques. Must have deep knowledge and experience of Lean Manufacturing and be well versed in overseeing focused kaizen improvement activities.
  • Project Management - Develop and manage projects as required to improve customer satisfaction, operations efficiency and cost position.
  • Planning & Strategy – Develop annual performance and financial goals. Assist with ongoing development and refinement of the LCD long term operations strategic plan.
  • Create capital appropriation requests and lead complex facilities and maintenance organizations.
  • Communicate effectively to all levels of the organization, including the LCD and FCP Leadership Teams. Co-ordinate site activity within a matrix structure.
  • Maintain the plant / facility in a manner consistent with the needs dictated:
    • Customers’ Expectations
    • Regulatory agencies requirements
    • Thermo Fisher Scientific Clean Desk/5S policies & procedures
    • Other tasks / projects as needed
How will you get here?
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering from an accredited higher learning institution required; advanced degree a plus, or 10 years directly related experience
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in the field of Continuous Improvement (PPI, Six Sigma and/or Lean) Methodologies
  • 10+ years’ operations experience managing in a matrix environment.
  • Strong demonstrated leadership expertise in global organization.
  • Process industry experience required; chemical or pharmaceutical experience a plus.
  • Exceptional leadership and coaching skill. Proven ability to develop a high-performance team.
  • Proven track record driving significant improvements in operational excellence
  • Strong analytical skills and experience managing to metrics, analyzing data visual reporting

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a direct to consumer business.
  • Demonstrated leadership implementing operational excellence techniques and initiatives, including lean manufacturing, 5S, continuous improvement, and/or six sigma tools. Lean Manufacturing certification required.
  • Knowledge about the manufacture, packaging and logistics of hazardous substances preferred.
  • Collaboration skills – Able to effectively collaborate with peers in other functions and with colleagues in other businesses or divisions.
