We are looking for an European IP Attorney


Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Analytical Instruments Group’s European Counsel for Intellectual Property, the IP Attorney will primarily provide patent drafting and prosecution support to the company’s Mass Spectrometry business in Bremen. Besides that, other EU group companies will be supported on a case by case basis. Located as part of a small IP group in Bremen at the Mass Spectrometry site of a major global company, there will be close working with external IP attorneys and there will also be opportunities to work with and support members of the EU Legal team on IP related matters and to work on diverse legal matters such as business-strategic protection of IP, freedom to operate, licensing, IP related contracts, oppositions, IP litigation management/support and dispute settlement. Some amount of European travel is required.

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

A qualified European patent attorney with experience in European patent prosecution and IP legal practice, either in a law firm or corporate context, is required. Ability to draft and prosecute patent applications and other documents efficiently in English is required. Experience in patent portfolio development, licensing, IP related contracts and enforcement, is desirable. Experience and/or interest in international IP law would be useful.
  • BS or higher degree in, physical sciences, life sciences or a related engineering discipline.
  • Registered as a European patent attorney.
  • Fluent in English and German
Other Required Skills:
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear patent applications, amendments, legal and business documents.
  • Team player with strong intercultural skills, hands-on mentality, self-starter, ability to work in a complex matrix business environment. Experience working with R & D teams and business managers would be useful. Working experience with a US corporation would be a plus.
  • Strong English and German oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze patentability and patent freedom-to-operate matters.
  • Technical competence in one or more of the following fields: Scientific instruments, Electronics, Spectroscopy, Optics, Physics, Chemistry, or comparable technologies, and demonstrated ability to learn new scientific and technological fields relevant to Thermo Fisher product offerings.
