Careers at ThermoFisher Scientific

International Women's Day

Thermo Fisher Scientific celebrates our women in leadership.

Ivette Helal

VP Human Resources Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry
Waltham, MA

Ivette has been growing with Thermo Fisher for 10 years. She was hired as an HR Director for Scientific Instruments. “I have had a pretty linear career path from HR Coordinator to HR Specialist to HR Generalist to HR Manager, then Director, then VP. I have experienced many different companies though, having been with a number of pharma or chemical companies prior to joining Thermo Fisher. Along the way I've always maintained a core set of mentors and advocates who have helped me greatly. I try to stay in touch with most of them. My husband of 25 years though has been my most enthusiastic champion throughout my career so I consider myself really lucky to have him.”

“I enjoy helping others succeed, so investing time in coaching, developing, and helping my team never feels like a chore because I really do enjoy it.”

“I think early on as a manager the greatest challenge was accepting that my success or failure as a leader is entirely dependent on others. As an individual contributor there was comfort in knowing that I was in charge of my output and results. As a leader, you're nothing but for the team, and I've learned over the years to enjoy that greatly rather than be stressed about it. The most important tool for me has been the honest feedback that I have received from others to help me improve.”

"I have sacrificed time with family at times, although not ever to the point that it became unacceptable. I have also had to embrace change and make moves that were uncomfortable. For example, I've relocated 3 times, including moving with Thermo Fisher from West Palm Beach, FL to Boston, Massachusetts!”

"Understand yourself deeply - what you like, dislike, core values, what you're really good at - then focus on finding something that you enjoy and plays to your strengths. Ask for help - there are plenty of people willing to help you along in your journey if you show ownership, enthusiasm and thoughtfulness. As a leader of other people - always put their interests before your own."
