International Women's Day
Thermo Fisher Scientific celebrates our women in leadership.
Lisa has been with Thermo Fisher for two years. Prior to joining us she spent 20+ years in Federal Law Enforcement as an agent with the United States Secret Service. “Working in the USSS I developed skills in threat assessment, operational security, countersurveillance, and investigations. I learned how to make the most impact with limited resources by building partnerships and leveraging capabilities. My mentors both in the USSS and in Thermo Fisher have been instrumental in my personal and professional growth.”
Understanding how to motivate a team with different personalities and strengths, providing honest feedback and communicating well to establish trust, and adapting to the audience and focusing on what is relevant/important to them.
“Driving change management.” To help with this challenge Lisa says that she is learning from her peers and her team, and seeking the support of functional leaders. She also joins professional organizations and groups, and seeks continuing education.
“Security is a 24X7 business. Traveling at a moment's notice and being readily available is part of the job. My family understands the nature of my work, and has always been very supportive. I understand that relocation is part of career progression, and I had to move multiple times. Many times throughout my career I heard my boss preface a new challenge as "it will be good for you." It may not have felt like it at the time, but it was usually true.”
“Be ‘all in’ for the long hours. Find trusted friends and mentors; if you’re lucky they will be one in the same. Having a bad boss can sometimes be as formative and helpful as having a good one…you learn what not to do and how not to act. Failure builds resilience and humility...two things I feel are important in a great leader. Be thankful for and appreciate your family and friends...without them, nothing is possible.“
