International Women's Day
Thermo Fisher Scientific celebrates our women in leadership.
Melissa has been growing with Thermo Fisher for 12 years. Her first position was in Global Market Development supporting the Drug Discovery product and services portfolio. “I am a recovering scientist getting my PhD in Biochemistry but realizing that basic/applied research was not my passion. I took a different path working in a small startup where I found my calling in marketing which I have enjoyed now for more than 20 years. I had some great mentors along the way who made all the difference in helping me achieve the next step in my career. I also dedicated time every year to activities that helped me learn and grow in the marketing function - attending courses, volunteering for special projects and expanding my network of professionals. I continued to invest in myself because there is always opportunity to improve.”
“I am people oriented so building relationships, coaching and resolving conflict come naturally to me. I enjoy working with teams and finding new ways to connect with our customers. I thoroughly enjoy being a people manager and lead with my strengths of learning, collaboration, and positive outlook. I am a willing thought partner or cheerleader, whichever is required.”
“Being a leader means being able to make decisions even when you may not have all the information desired. The tools I used to help me improve were journaling and coaching with a mentor. Every week I reflected on a decision/risk I made (or didn't make) to understand why I made those choices. Then I met with my mentor to discuss what they would have done so I could gain other perspectives.”
“Throughout my career I have tried hard to achieve balance between my personal life and career to avoid making any significant sacrifices. In general, I feel good about the choices I have made. I have lived in multiple locations in the US and held many roles in small to large companies. As a marketing professional, travel is part of my role and this has ranged from 25 - 50% on average. Travel at times has conflicted with personal family events which I have had to miss. My managers have been very flexible over the years but some times I have had to choose work over personal. I am dedicated to my career and role and when challenges arise I work with my manager first and try to find a resolution to avoid feeling like I am making a sacrifice.”
“Find your passion first - you can't be a leader if you don't absolutely love what you do every day. Second, be honest with yourself and admit what you don't know and then either go learn more or surround yourself with team members who are experts to help you. A great leader can't do it alone - getting help, partnering with others and being confident in your skills will take you far.”
