Careers at ThermoFisher Scientific

International Women's Day

Thermo Fisher Scientific celebrates our women in leadership.

Rosalie Berne

Sr Director, Global Commercial Operations, Materials and Structural Analysis
Hillsboro, OR

Rosalie has been growing with Thermo Fisher for 26 years. “I was hired into the company as an order administrator processing orders and quoting both in the US and internationally. I also worked 50% in the finance department ensuring transactions and numbers were correct in closing the quarter. I moved to field service management, then to service support management setting up the global sales and service operation centers. On the way I took classes in International Business and finance classes which together with my degree in science and statistics background helped understand the global business. I had good managers along the way that supported me and the team around me that I could trust to support and execute."

“Communication skills - connecting with people and having a positive can-do attitude. As a leader you not only need to communicate well outwardly but also use listening skills to really listen and read the people around you . Not only what they are saying but what they are not saying. It is also having the confidence to speak up when you believe it is needed.”

“Being a woman in a man’s world has been the most challenging and still is. I have found many times over the years I have been judged more harshly than men for doing or saying the same things - especially when being more aggressive. Women still have to work hard to be recognized for their contributions and seen as equals. I think it is important how women present themselves in the workplace.”

“Being a working mother always means sacrifice and in my job and the travel means you are away from home more than you would like to be. The key is I have always tried to ensure that I was home for birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, special celebrations. This is definitely the number one sacrifice to reach where I am today.”

“Believe in yourself, be present. Keep your listening skills in tune all the time. And it’s important how you dress and present yourself in the workplace - if you want to be taken seriously - dress the part. Be self aware and show empathy with the people around you and always be honest with yourself and others.”
