As a Technical Development Chemist, my job focuses on providing technical and process chemistry support to both new and existing products at the Cork site. I like the variety and opportunities my job affords me. No day is the same. The job is extremely rewarding and provides me with challenges, which continuously build my capabilities and skills. It also allows me the chance to participate in several cross-functional activities.

What I enjoy most about the Cork site is the people, who provide both a supportive and collaborative environment to work in. There is a huge sense of teamwork on site, which is essential for achieving any tasks set out and ensuring projects comes to fruition. The fact that my work and that of the site collectively contribute to making a positive impact on people’s lives is really satisfying and makes it all worthwhile.

I work with a team of qualified fitters to ensure site preventative maintenance is carried out as per the schedule while learning new skills daily. I like the variety of work in each of the site buildings and how no two days are the same. Every day I learn something new. The team work’s closely together to support each other and provide the very best training for apprentices. I’m enjoying the team spirit and culture within Thermo Fisher Scientific Cork. When I am working on existing processes, I continuously monitoring them to ensure everything is operating as required, troubleshooting issues and searching for ways to improve them. When new products are being scoped out and introduced to the site, I try to ensure that the product is put in a bay on the plant that best fits the requirement to ensure that any product is delivered to our customers is of the highest standards.

The thing I like most about my current job is that no two days are the same. There are always new problems to be solved, new customer needs to be met and the potential for more innovative technologies to be used. It is an industry that never stands still. And most importantly, it is great to feel you are making a difference to patients’ lives all over the world.

In my role as a material scheduler, I’m responsible for purchasing direct materials, managing supplier relationships and ensuring there are materials available for production as part of our Supply Chain function. The procurement activities have recently become a new responsibility of the site. As a result, a local procurement team has been set up which manages the inbound supply chain of both new and existing products. It is an exciting time for the team as new business brings new opportunities. I love the variability of my job as every single day is different, and it is both challenging and exciting.

As a recent addition to the Thermo Fisher network, the transition to becoming a Contract Development & Manufacturing Organization (CDMO) was smooth and it is great to see the business growing. I am excited to see what the future holds for the site and also my career. The exposure and career opportunities are infinite at Thermo Fisher Scientific.
