Preparing Your Resume

Ensure your resume stands out from the crowd! Check out our top 4 resume tips from the University Relations team.
When creating your resume, it's important to maintain a consistent formatting style throughout the resume.

  • Use bullet points to draw attention to the most important information.
  • Say what needs to be said in a concise way - try to stick to one page.
  • When you're ready, save your resume as a PDF with your first and last name (i.e. John_Smith_Resume) - the recruiter will thank you!
Play up your selling points and be authentic!
  • Use action words to describe major projects and highlight results achieved.
  • Show off your GPA if you have a 3.0 or higher.
  • Include relevant extra-curricular activities.
  • Don't forget those valuable internships! If you haven't had the opportunity to intern yet, include relevant coursework.
  • Focus on experiences that are related to the job and company you are applying to - yes, this means you should tweak your resume for every different job you apply for!
Now that you have an excellent resume clearly highlighting your qualifications, we want to talk to you! Make sure we can easily find out how: be clear about your contact information.

  • Do you have a professional email address? If not, it's time for an update... isn't going to cut it in the professional world, so head on over to Gmail or Yahoo to get a new username.
  • Include your LinkedIn profile with a hyperlink for ease of use.
  • Do you have permanent and school addresses? Include both so recruiters know where you are geographically located.
Proofread Your Resume
Almost ready to submit your new resume?

  • Proofread and spellcheck first!
  • Hiring managers will not call you for an interview if you have spelling or grammar errors on your resume.
